The Afro Sambas of Baden PowellLatin
Directed by Julie Bevan
The late Brazilian composer Baden Powell was one of the most expressive composers of 20th Century Brazilian popular music. His Afro sambas are considered his most profound works and are much loved by guitarists around the world. Composed in collaboration with poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes in 1963, they are the result of Powells' journey of discovery into the African roots of Brazilian music.
Nine New Zealand and Brazilian, singers and musicians, along with two Brazilian dancers/choreographers, will present these works as a song cycle. The show will explore the deeper roots of Afro-Brazilian culture and the added significance they bring to this work. Directed by Julie Bevan
