Roger ManinsSax
New Zealander Roger Manins is one of the leading jazz saxophonists in Australasia.
Described as ‘that rarest of musician who manages to effortlessly marry tradition and individuality, swinging hardbop with feisty modernism, with a sound that can at once charm and excite’, Manins plays with a tenderness and authority that unite generations of jazz lovers, from listeners of Billie, Pres and Parker, to Ornette, Coltrane and Lovano.
Roger’s artistic achievements are also marked by a strong educational focus, in his roles as Lecturer at the University of Auckland School of Music and as co-founder and Artistic Director of the Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa.
In 2012 he was awarded a ‘Jazz Hero’ Award by the international Jazz Journalist’s Association in recognition of his outstanding ability, passion, services to education, generosity (and his good sense of humor), and in 2002 was the winner of the Wangaratta Australian National Jazz Awards for Saxophone. |
