Pan FrancisJazzPan Franics are chordless trio shooting rays of blissful collective improvisation via quirky melodies and thumping beats. Blending jazz, the avant-garde and acoustic rock they form a unique character featuring the vibrant musical prowess of Jon Crompton (alto saxophone), Nick Martyn (drums/ percussion) and Michael Story (acoustic bass). Having spent the majority of 2010 writing and recording an eclectic assortment of original tunes and de-constructions of assorted rock and pop classics, Pan Francis’ sound is hinged on collective improvisation and interplay with reckless abandon and astonishing virtuosity. Jon Crompton leads the group with his expert original writing. Although classically trained, Jon was a finalist in the prestigious Australian National Jazz Competition in 2009. Additionally, he is the recipient of a 2010 Australia Council for the Arts music grant to continue his studies in New York. Michael Story, originally from New Zealand, has over the past 6 years established himself as one of Melbourne’s most sought after bassists. He has toured internationally as a band leader (MST) and sideman with a variety of groups playing jazz, pop and hip hop. Nick Martyn has performed and recorded with dozens of jazz, punk, electro-acoustic and R’n’B bands. Having toured nationally with the Big Day Out Festival and through Europe, the UK and Turkey, Nick is an experienced performer and collaborator. |
