Winner of the 2016 Tui for Best Jazz Album, Phil Broadhurst brings his classic trio of Alberto Santarelli and Frank Gibson to present a programme of originals and standards featuring the lovely voice of Julie Mason.

Consider one of New Zealand’s foremost jazz pianists and composer, Phil  has a wide ranging list of accolades and achievements, including being the first jazz musician to be awarded the MNZM for services to jazz.

Phil Broadhurst’s recent award winning album “Panacea” is the third instalment in a highly successful album trilogy following his quartet’s “Flaubert’s Dance” (2013 Rattle Records) and “Delayed Reaction” (2011), also both finalists in the Tui Awards, which Phil has now won four times. In 2016 Phil was a finalist in the inaugural APRA award for Best Jazz Composition for his tune Flaubert’s Dance.

Phil is also a well-known broadcaster, for many years he has been the voice of New Zealand jazz presenting his own weekly programme “The Art Of Jazz” on Radio New Zealand Concert FM. He has performed at major festivals in both New Zealand and Australia and his numerous credits include work in the US, UK and France, and collaborating with many jazz greats visiting NZ, including Johnny Griffin, Ronnie Scott, and Scott Hamilton.

Pianist/vocalist Julie Mason is one of NZ’s foremost women in jazz. Julie has been a finalist in the NZ Jazz Album of the Year Awards and just released her 6th album Layers Of Disguise, in May. She has performed all over the globe, including jazz clubs in Paris, Berlin & London, tours of The USA & Canada, and festivals throughout New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific. Julie will be departing NZ in December with her husband Phil Broadhurst, for a year on the jazz scene in Paris.

The rhythm section includes Kiwi Icon drummer Frank Gibson, who has played with everyone internationally from Joe Henderson & Sonny Stitt to Diana Krall. Italian bassist Alberto Santarelli has also performed all over the globe and is widely respected in both NZ and his native Italy.

The programme will feature the originals of Phil Broadhurst from his award-winning album Panacea. It will also include works of jazz pianists/composers such as Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Rowles, Duke Pearson and Jobim, some as instrumentals & others vocalized, as featured in Julie’s latest CD release.

Luca Ciarla (Italy)

Luca Ciarla has performed in over 50 countries around in the world, in some of the most prestigious festivals and venues. 

Luca redraws the borders of jazz violin with a loop pedal, his voice, and electronics. Step by step he performs live all the parts, playing his instruments like a guitar, a bass or a percussion instrument, unfolding new improvisations and virtuoso passages. In this imaginative landscape Luca sings, whistles, plays other little instruments; music is continuously evolving into an astonishing solo jazz band! Jazz Violin 2.0 features unusual arrangements of jazz standards and original compositions. Luca attends the festival in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney.
