Jazz Pianist


Bill Martin is a Dunedin-based jazz pianist who has maintained a three-year Friday night residency at the popular Carousel Lounge Bar in Dunedin as the leader of the Bill Martin Trio.


Performance highlights including a number of high profile concerts at the Queenstown Jazz Festival (2014), as well as appearances at the Otago Festival of the Arts in 2010 with “Entropy Trio” (Paul Young) and the “Bobby Vinson Combo” (Robert Milne) and in 2012 with the “Karin Reid & the Bill Martin Trio”, and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Visitor's Program (2013).  He has performed with legends such as Edwina Thorne and Jeff Bradley, and numerous contemporary players on the Dunedin jazz scene.


In 2012, Bill Martin released a CD of his own compositions titled "The Waitati Concert" under the name of Resonance Trio. He has recently recorded a new album at the University of Otago's Albany Street Studio which will be released in late 2015.


Bill has accompanied touring artists such as Jeff Bradley and Edwina Thorne and was co-host of the long running "Jazz Junction" show on Radio One with Richard Good during 2014. He works as a jazz educator in Dunedin and teaches classical piano at St Hilda's College. He also holds a doctorate in English literature from the University of New South Wales and is the author of the book Joyce and the Science of Rhythm (Palgrave-MacMillan 2012).
